TRAVERSE CITY - Authorities have reopened two lanes of U.S. 31 North following an early-morning car crash that knocked down power lines and closed the highway.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department said it reopened the east and westbound lanes between 3 and 4 Mile roads. The Sheriff's Department is asking motorists to proceed through the area slowly due to ongoing work on power lines.
Authorities said an eastbound pickup truck left the road near Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf, struck a power pole and then crossed the center line of the road and hit another vehicle. The driver of the truck sustained injuries and was transported to Munson Medical Center. Deputies are conducting an investigation.
Roger Morgenstern, spokesman for Consumers Energy, said 48 commercial and residential customers between the 1200 and 1800 block of US 31 North lost power. He said the utility pole and its transformer were damaged enough to make the repairs last hours.
“We had to replace the pole -- that’s why it’s taking it so long,” he said.
