Gaylord conference

Gaylord — Monday, Oct. 1, is the deadline to register for a conference that opens a "Year of Faith" in the Diocese of Gaylord.

The conference on Saturday, Oct. 6, includes two keynote presentations and breakout sessions at the diocese, 611 W. North St. The $25 cost includes lunch; scholarships are available.

Prostate cancer talk

Traverse City — The public is invited to a free program on prostate cancer on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

Urologists Daniel Flewelling, MD, Ward R. Gillett, MD, Robert M. Hall, MD, Jay A. Starr, MD, and Wayne K. Stefanciw, MD, will discuss the disease from 6 to 8 p.m. in conference room 1 at Munson Medical Center, 1105 Sixth St. There also will be a demonstration of the da Vinci surgical device.

Church open house

Benzonia — Hilltop Tabernacle invites the community to an open house Friday, Oct. 5.

Breast cancer event

Acme — Sign up is under way for "Recovery Plus," a program for women who have had or are currently living with breast cancer.

The program will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. The $25 cost includes continental breakfast, lunch, a pampering session and speakers.

Pets to be blessed

Traverse City --All creatures, great and small, and their humans are invited to the annual Blessing of the Animals service Sunday, Oct. 7, at Grace Episcopal Church, 341 Washington St.

The service honoring St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, will start at 4 p.m. outdoors in the church parking lot, weather permitting. All pets should be leashed or in cages. For details, call 947-2330.

Post adoption group

Traverse City — A group designed for families who have adopted through the state foster care system will begin meeting on the first Sunday of each month starting Oct. 7.

The Post Adoption Connections Group will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. at West Side Community Church, 4975 M-72 West. The church's children's program and nursery will be staffed and available. There is no charge. For details or registration, call 590-8644.

Program for women

Bear Lake — Bear Lake Christian Church will sponsor a community fellowship for women.

The program will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the church on M-72 West. Dr. Lyles will discuss research into PMDD, PMS, pregnancy, post partum depression and other women's depression issues.

Harvest dinner

Life Chain Sunday

Traverse City — National Life Chain Sunday will be observed locally from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.

The Grand Traverse Area Life Chain bears witness to the sanctity of human life. Participants will silently hold pro-life signs on the sidewalks along Grandview Parkway and Front Street running east to west from Fair to Division streets. Signs will be available along the route.
