Author signs book

Water blessed

Traverse City --A Blessing of the Water Ceremony will be held Saturday, Jan. 5.

Father Ciprian Streza of the Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Church will lead the ceremony at noon at the base of West Grand Traverse Bay at the Marina Pier. Everyone, Orthodox and non-Orthodox, is invited to attend this unique religious service, celebrated in English.

Forum on Africa

Traverse City — A forum on Africa with Anders Kelto, originally scheduled for Dec. 30, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Jan. 6.

Kelto is an investigative reporter for Public Radio International and works at the health desk for PRI's "The World," a radio show co-produced by the BBC World Service, PRI and WGBH Boston. He is based in Cape Town.

Kelto will discuss his experiences in Africa at 9:15 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1050 Peninsula Dr.

Picnic at the Opera

Traverse City — The community is invited to bring their lunch and be part of the studio audience for Picnic at the Opera, a live musical variety show which will be cablecast live by UpNorth TV 97 and 992.

The show will star Miriam Pico, musical guests, local artists and regular guest, poet Michael Delp. In addition, a different area nonprofit service organization will be featured each week and will take home donations made by members of the studio audience.

Picnic at the Opera will be hosted from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 8-Feb. 12, in the lobby of the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St. For details, visit www.upnorthmedia.org.

COA meeting

Traverse City — The public is invited to the Tuesday, Jan. 8, meeting of the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging.

TSO releases CD

Traverse City — The Traverse Symphony Orchestra has released "2 To Celebrate," a new CD featuring first-ever Van Cliburn Piano Competition gold medalist Ralph Votapek.

The recording features Votapek performing the two piano concerti with which he won the competition. It also includes an orchestral highlight from Paul Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

Artist reception

Traverse City — An artist reception will open with an exhibit of work by Denny Kline.

The reception will be hosted from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 4, in Rinaldo Hall, adjacent to Gallery Fifty at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Art exhibit opens

Traverse City — A reception from 1 to 3 p.m. today, Jan. 6, will open an exhibit of art by Michelle Hart Jahraus at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave.

Jahraus was honored recently as a selected artist for her "Sleeping Bear Wave Tag" to be included in the 2013 America's Parks Through the Beauty of Art international art competition and exhibition. Her art may be viewed through January at the library.
