Adult, teen parties

Traverse City — Mt. Holiday will host Halloween parties for adults and teens.

Adults are invited to celebrate Halloween from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26 with live music, prizes and more. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

The first annual Monster Bash Teen Costume Party is from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, with live music, pizza and beverages. Tickets are $12 in advance or $13 at the door.

Tickets for both parties are on sale at Mt. Holiday, Holiday Shopper and Donn Orr Ski Haus.

Brilliant anniversary

Traverse City — Brilliant Books, 118 E. Front St., will mark its one-year anniversary with an all-day celebration Saturday, Oct. 27.

During the day, there will be crafts, games, a puppet show and a pinata.

An evening Grand Party will include drinks, goodies, a raffle and party fare provided by the book store's downtown neighbors. Details of future events are posted to facebook/BrilliantBooks and www.Brilliant-Books.net

NMC food drive

Traverse City — Northwestern Michigan College business students are challenging Grand Traverse area businesses and residents to donate healthy, non-perishable food items to help fill the 47 pantries associated with the Northwest Food Coalition.

The student-led "Food For Thought" food drive continues through Nov. 13.

The students invited 30 area businesses to conduct internal food drives. Donations also will be accepted from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Traverse City Walmart; 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3-4, at Tom's Acme and West Bay food markets; Nov. 1-13 at all Traverse City Family Video locations and at NMC"s main campus buildings, the University Center and the Aero Park Campus.

Raffle tickets for prizes donated by local merchants will be awarded for each donation of five non-perishable items at Walmart and Tom's.

'Selected Shorts'

Traverse City — The highly acclaimed NPR series, "Selected Shorts," will be live at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St., on Saturday, Nov. 3. The theme is "Falling In Love."

"Selected Shorts" starts at 8 p.m. It features Jane Kaczmarek from "Malcolm In The Middle," Keir Dullea from the film "2001: A Space Odyssey," and Mia Dillon from the film "Crimes of the Heart."

Autumn Fest fun

Bellaire — Grass River Natural Area, 6500 Alden Highway, will host Halloween fun for families at Autumn Fest on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Participants will have opportunities to meet animals on a haunted hike, play in a boneyard, pound a pumpkin, test their wings, and make Halloween crafts. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. Visit www.grassriver.org or call 533-8314 for details.

A not-too-scary walk

Traverse City — A community Halloween celebration Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Peninsula Community Library includes a not-too-scary walk in the woods.

The free event starts at 6 p.m. at the library, 2699 Island View Road. Visitors can walk a mini-spider web maze, bob for apples, craft a haunted house and enjoy refreshments.

Fall Festival

Arcadia — The Pleasant Valley Community Center will host its Pumpkins & Haystacks Festival on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Activities take place from 2 to 9 p.m. at the community center, M-22 and Glovers Lake Road. Kids' games start at 2 p.m., with a bake walk at 4 p.m. and a pig roast dinner at 5 p.m. New this year, a Pumpkin Night Run 5K starts at 7 p.m.
