Tree management

EMPIRE — Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Superintendent Dusty Shultz announced the the National Park Service will update its Hazard Tree Management Plan to include responses to current and imminent tree disease epidemics and will accept ideas and input from the public until Feb. 15.

Public comments may be submitted at the National Park Service’s Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website, http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projecthome.cfm?projectId=45319. Comments also may be mailed to Superintendent, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, 9922 Front St., Empire, MI 49630.

Comments will be evaluated and considered during the development of alternatives and analysis of their impacts contained in the Environmental Assessment (EA). When the EA is completed, the National Lakeshore will again seek public input. For details, visit www.nps.gov/slbe.

 

Early Literacy

BENZONIA — The Benzonia Public Library, 891 Michigan Ave., has acquired the Early Literacy Station (ELS), a comprehensive turnkey educational solution loaded with more than 60 educational software titles for children ages 2 to 8.

The ELS is a safe, stand-alone computer not connected to the Internet that is age-appropriate and academically relevant for children. It is designed to support school readiness and technology access while making learning exciting and engaging. Software covers seven curricular areas: reading, math, science, social studies, writing, arts and music, and reference.

The ELS was purchased with patron donations and funds raised by the Friends of the Benzonia Public Library at their 2013 Holiday Book Sale.

 

GED prep

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwest Michigan Works! Learning Labs, located in Benzonia, Cadillac, East Jordan, Kalkaska, Manistee and Traverse City, are offering help for students preparing for the new GED test, which was revamped this year for the first time since 2002.

The GED 2014 test emphasizes problem-solving over memorization and is designed to more quickly move people to college and career options and ensure that adult learners are prepared for college and career training programs.
