TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse Children’s Garden will host its 12th annual Awards Night at 7 p.m. today, Aug. 8, at the Traverse Area District Library Learning Garden, 610 Woodmere Ave. Friends of the Garden are welcome.

‘Scotch & Sticks’

TRAVERSE CITY — The inaugural “Scotch & Sticks” event will take place today, Aug. 8, at Elmbrook Golf Course.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 each and include 12 scotch tastings, the choice of one premium cigar, snacks and a keepsake scotch glass. Prior to the event, participants have the opportunity to play nine holes of golf with a cart at 2 p.m. Golf is $20 per person.

Jazz at Sunset

Pig roast

BEULAH — The Beulah Boosters will hold a pig roast fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 10, to raise money to support village activities and improvements and to help fund installation of a new pickleball court at Village Park.

PEO fundraiser

TRAVERSE CITY — Chapter EV of the P.E.O (Philanthropic Educational Organization) will hold a garage sale fundraiser Saturday, August 10

The sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Peninsula Township Fire Station 2 at the base of Old Mission Peninsula. Proceeds benefit the chapter’s scholarship programs.

Twilight ride

GLEN ARBOR — Cherry Republic and Friends of the Sleeping Bear Dunes will sponsor the inaugural Sleepy Bear Twilight Ride on Sunday, Aug. 11. All ages are welcome.

The 8 p.m. non-competitive ride starts and ends at Cherry Republic. Riders can choose from a 4.5 or 9-mile loop on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. Bike rentals are available at Crystal River Outfitters.

Registration is a suggested donation of $30 for families; $10 per person. Proceeds will be used for Heritage Trail operations. For details or advance registration, visit

Art workshops

EAST JORDAN — Jordan River Arts Council will celebrate northern Michigan artists and artisans in a show titled “Art Full Rooms.” Three workshops also will be held in conjunction with the show.

Area designers have taken furniture, wall art, pottery, fiber art and other handmade art pieces to create seven cottage rooms. The show opens at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at the Jordan River Arts Council, 301 Main St. It may be viewed from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays through Sept. 22.

Workshops during the exhibit are “What Color Are You,” 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 17; “You and Art: What When Where,” 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 24; and “Creating Assemblages with Found Objects,” 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 14.

Library book sale

BELLAIRE — The Friends of the Bellaire Public Library will hold a used book sale on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 15-16.

Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at the library, 111 S. Bridge St. Donations will be accepted through Tuesday, Aug. 13. No textbooks or Reader’s Digest condensed books will be accepted. For details, call 533-8814.

Savings program

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA) will hold an orientation session for the Individual Development Account (IDA) Program.

RN-AIM meeting

TRAVERSE CITY — George Davis, BSN, RN, District Health Department #10, will discuss “School Nursing: Renewing the Concept During Healthcare Reform” at the Tuesday, Aug. 13, meeting of the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan. All nurses and student nurses are welcome.

BENZONIA — Genealogist Lauri Gartner will be the guest speaker at the Wednesday, Aug. 14, meeting of the Benzie Area Genealogical Society.

Gartner will demonstrate “divining” to find unmarked graves, how to decipher and read old tombstones, methods for cleaning tombstones and how to use mirrors to enhance photographs of gravestones.

The short meeting and presentation starts at 2 p.m. at the Benzonia Township Cemetery on Love Road. In case of bad weather, the program will be at the Benzie Area Historical Museum, 6941 Traverse Ave.

Lighthouse help

TRAVERSE CITY — The Joshua Davis Trio will perform a benefit concert on Wednesday, Aug. 14, for the restoration and preservation of the Mission Point Lighthouse, a State and National Historic Site.

The event starts at 6 p.m. in the Peninsula Room at the Jolly Pumpkin. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door and include the concert and a dinner buffet. Proceeds from a silent auction and beer sales also will benefit the lighthouse. Tickets are available at Oryana Natural Foods Market or the Peninsula Market on Old Mission Peninsula.
