High school art exhibit

SCOTTVILLE — The West Shore Community College Art Department's 15th annual Regional High School Art Competition and Exhibit opens today, March 11, in the college’s Manierre Dawson Gallery.

Area high schools were invited to enter 10 of their students' best works and those included in the exhibit have been selected by high school art teachers. A reception will be hosted 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in the gallery. Student art will be on display through Saturday, March 23.

The Manierre Dawson Gallery is located in WSCC's Arts and Sciences Center. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday.

Tech Academy info

TRAVERSE CITY — The TBAISD Career-Tech Center Manufacturing Technology Academy will host student/parent information nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, Wednesday, March 20, and Thursday, April 4.

All meetings will be at the Northwestern Michigan College Parsons-Stulen Building, 2600 Aero Park Dr. For details or to sign up for an information night, call Tim Wheatley, 995-1304.

Family Arts Night

TRAVERSE CITY — Family Arts Night on Tuesday, March 12, at the Greenspire School includes hands-on visual and language arts activities inspired by nature.

Activities will be offered from 5 to 7 p.m. at the school, 1026 Red Dr. in the Grand Traverse Commons. The event, co-sponsored by Blackbird Arts, is free and open to the public.

Story hour with author

EMPIRE — A special story hour Thursday, March 14, at the Glen Lake Community Library will feature Maggie van Galen, author of the new children's book "The Adventures of Keeno & Ernest: The Banana Tree."

This is a homecoming for the Massachusetts-based author who grew up in northern Michigan. She will read her picture book at 11 a.m. at the library, 10115 E. Front St. For details, call 326-5361 or visit www.glenlakelibrary.net.
