TRAVERSE CITY — The Concerts on the Lawn series at the Grand Traverse Pavilions opens Thursday, July 11, with the Sun Radius Studio Steel Pan Band and Japanese Drummers.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. on the Grand Lawn at the Pavilions off South Elmwood Avenue. Concessions open at 6:15 p.m. and include burgers, hot dogs, chips and Moomer’s ice cream. Raffle tickets also will be sold for $5 each for a $1,000 drawing.

Picnic and concert

TRAVERSE CITY — The staff at the Peninsula Community Library invites the community to pack a picnic and blanket and join them under the trees for an evening of music.

‘Patterns’ study

GLEN ARBOR — Ohio artist Joseph Lombardo will exhibit his study of “Patterns” plein air and studio paintings of Leelanau County at Center Gallery at Lake Street Studios, 6023 S. Lake St.

Lombardo will give a demonstration from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 12, at the gallery and his exhibit opens that night with a reception at 6 p.m. The exhibit continues through Thursday, July 18. Call 334-3179 to learn more.

South Arm Classics

EAST JORDAN — The South Arm Classics will include a new kayak poker run and expanded boat and car shows.

On Saturday, July 13, the South Arm Classic Boat Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Classic Car Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The new Kayak Poker run is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. An expanded Micro Brew Tent featuring 10 breweries will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. in the East Jordan City Marina parking lot and will showcase two musical venues.

Watercolor show

TRAVERSE CITY — Artcenter Traverse City will host the annual Michigan Water Color Society traveling show featuring the best 30 watercolor paintings of the 66th annual Water Color Society competition and show.

The exhibit opens with a reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at the Traverse City Art and Design Studio, 1207 Woodmere Ave. It will be on display during the studio’s regular hours, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., through Aug. 16. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Several events are scheduled in conjunction with the show. Local watercolorist Charles Murphy will give an overview of the watercolor process and discuss individual pieces in the show on July 18; a color-mixing class will be held Aug. 8 through 11 with Kim Santini; and a lecture titled “Art Marketing 101: Brand Yourself,” also by Santini, will be held Aug. 9.

Quilts in the garden

SUTTONS BAY — Silvertree Art Quilters will host their third “Art Quilts in the Garden Show & Sale” on Saturday, July 13.

Art quilts, mixed media vessels, sculpture, dolls and more will be on display and for sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bellwether Gardens, 10203 E. Shady Lane. Admission is free.

Star Party

EMPIRE — The community is invited to view the moon, Saturn and various constellations at a “Star Party” from 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Platte River Point on Lake Michigan Road off M-22, south of Empire. The event is sponsored by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The program is free, however a park entrance pass or an annual national park pass is required. Visitors should bring a flashlight and bug spray. The party will be cancelled in case of bad weather. Country dance

CADILLAC — The Fonda Starr Band will play for an old-time country dance from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at 9116 E. 13th St., next to Kiley Chiropractic. Free dance instruction will be provided and admission is by donation. For details, call 920-8389.


Miles performs

LAKE LEELANAU — Canadian singer/songwriter Lynn Miles will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Redheads Cafe and Tasting Room on M-204.

Vendors sought

TRAVERSE CITY — Vendor applications for the Traverse City Makers Market will be accepted until Monday, July 15.

The juried art market will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21, at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Vendors must be Michigan residents.
