Looking back: 12/17/2012

n The last meeting of the Benzie county Pomona Grange was with Loyalty Grange, located at Homestead. The recently erected hall for Loyalty Grange was dedicated by Deputy State Master B. B. Alley. At this meeting a class of 24 was given the secret work of the fifth degree.

n Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Berry and daughter of Northport left early last week for Panio Gorda, Florida where they will spend the winter. They will return again in April.

n With the coming of winter, the County Humane Society has again started a vigorous crusade against the practice of leaving horses unblanketed or of working them on the streets without being sharp shod.

After today, persons driving horses which are unable to keep their feet will be notified by County Humane Officer Carson to have them shod. In the case of further negligence, they will be prosecuted.

n William Boster of Cleveland who has been in the city for some time on business, left this morning for Mt. Clemens. He will be there for a short time before returning to his home in Ohio.

n President D. H. Day and Secretary John I. Gibson of the Western Michigan Development Bureau will be in the city Tuesday to attend a meeting called for the purpose of outfitting a campaign of activity for the winter. Representatives from Manistee, Grand Rapids, Freemont and Charlevoix will also be present.

n Orator Patch, the finest bred stallion colt that has ever entered northern Michigan was brought to the city today by Edward Lautner. The colt was sired by the famous Dan Patch, who holds the world's champion pacing record of 1.55. It is the intention of Mr. Lautner to train him for the track and from appearances he should develop into one of the fastest horses on Michigan turf.

n W. C. Roderick, who has been here for some time on business left this morning for Ludington where he will be for a few days before returning to his home at Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Roderick makes frequent trips to Michigan and is well known in several of the larger cities.

n The December term of the circuit court convened promptly at 1:30 last Monday afternoon with a fair sized calendar to be heard in the next few weeks. Of thirty cases listed, fourteen are divorce cases. The first case to be taken up and one of the most interesting will be the People vs. Joseph D. Rex, blackmail, which court watchers believe promises sensations.

n Another case of high interest is against Joseph Klepac brought by the People of keeping his saloon open after 10 o'clock. He has plead guilty and was instructed that the case would be given a hearing some time before the close of this season of court.

n Characterized by beautiful simplicity and dignity, the home wedding of Miss Minnie Belle Lovely and Mr. George Frank Rowe at the William H. Lovely residence Saturday, was one of the finest functions every celebrated in Howard City. One hundred guests, relatives and friends of the family, witnessed the impressive ceremony. Following a large reception, the couple left for their home in Traverse City.

n The Sunday school class at Acme held their meeting for December at Miss Marguerite Johnson's. The next meeting will be held January 2nd at Miss Lottie Stites' home. The class has a large number of rural members and is adding members each month.

n Advice on deportment. Do not always commence a conversation by an allusion to the weather.

n Medical advice of a century ago. The toenails should be cut regularly and carefully.
