Early this spring, commercial and residential customers and all the staff at the AmeriGas Benzie district office delivered more than 1,500 cans and boxes of food to the Benzie Area Christian Neighbors food pantry in Benzonia.
All AmeriGas customers were encouraged to donate cans or cash to the drive, which then became a $5 credit on their propane bill.
“This was our third year of doing this promotion,” said Greg Ryan, office manager. “We feel it’s a real win-win for the community and for AmeriGas. The response this year was wonderful (and) the drive has grown dramatically. The very first year, our goal was 1,500 cans for all the AmeriGas branches across northern Michigan. To do that much this year in just our district was a very pleasant surprise. It made us very happy to have this kind of impact.”
When BACN fund-raiser David Abeel and executive director Gerri VanAntwerp went over to AmeriGas to say thank you for the promotion, they thought they would just put the food in the back of the car and take it back to the pantry.
“When we saw the huge stack of cans, we had to laugh,” Gerri said. “No way that was going to fit in our little car. Fortunately, AmeriGas volunteered to use one of their trucks to deliver (the food). Thank you to all who made this drive possible.”
