n The Builders Exchange of NW Michigan, Traverse City, awarded their Annual Scholarships to Jack Ocobock, 2012 graduate of Kingsley High School, attending Grand Valley State University; Jamie DeKraker, 2014 graduate of Cadillac High School, attending Grand Valley State or Central Michigan; Harley Harrison, 2014 graduate of TC West Senior High, attending Hope College; and Noble Forrest Lewallen, 2014 graduate of TC Central High School, attending MSU or U of M.

n NMC recently announced winners of their Faculty Excellence awards. Lisa Blackford, who teaches social work and psychology, is the Imogene Wise Faculty Excellence Award winner. Julie Puckett, who teaches beginning and intermediate algebra, is the Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award winner. Chosen by a student selection committee, criteria for both awards include teaching excellence, rapport with students, innovation in the classroom and a sense of dedication.

n Collin Platts, of Bingham Township, son of Raymond and Barbara Platts, has been awarded a U.S. Army ROTC National Nursing Scholarship. Platts is a senior at Lake Leelanau St. Mary and has been accepted into the nursing program at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

n The Peggy Browning Fund has awarded a 10-week summer fellowship to Alexandra Gillett, of Traverse City. Gillett, a second year student at DePaul University College of Law, will spend the fellowship working at Working Hands Legal Clinic in Chicago, Ill. Peggy Browning Fellowships provide law students with work experiences fighting for social and economic justice.

n The Job Winslow Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently announced the winners of their American History Essay Contest. This year the topic was “The Lives of Children During the American Revolution” for grades five through eight. The winners were Olivia Seymour, fifth grade student at Central Grade School (she also placed second overall for the State of Michigan); Camilla Kiessel, sixth grade student at the Montessori at Glenn Loomis School; Katia Childs, seventh grade student at West Middle School in Traverse City; Tess Messo, eighth grade student at East Middle School in Traverse City (she also placed among the top 10 overall for the State of Michigan); and Elliot Smith, eighth grade student at East Middle School, Traverse City, won second place.
