n North Central Michigan College Employees of the Year for 2013-2014 were recently announced. Jamee Fry, director of conference and food service, received the Full-Time Professional Staff award. Elizabeth Otto with Learning Support Services received the Full-Time Support Staff Award. Kathy Cyrulik, student services advisor in the Gaylord location, received the Part-Time Staff award.
n Grayling High School earned a Silver Medal for the second straight year. The U.S. News and World Report ranks high schools across the nation to identify the best high schools in America. The two previous years, GHS also was honored nationally with bronze medals the two previous years.
n Northwestern Michigan College Great Lakes Maritime Academy Engineering Department Head Michael Hochscheidt was presented the Merchant Marine Outstanding Achievement Medal in honor of his 35 years of service as an instructor at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, his hard work, uncompromising professionalism and his legacy of developing world class Merchant Marine officers. In February 2012 the Maritime Administration honored GLMA instructor Bob Mason with the same award in honor of his service to the Merchant Marine and his record of training pilots for Great Lakes service. Mason and Hochscheidt are believed to be the only individuals on the Great Lakes who have been awarded the Merchant Marine Outstanding Achievement Medal.
n The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced this year’s National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners, which included two area students: Lily C. Buday, of Harbor Springs, student at Concord Academy; and Jamison J. Chung, of Traverse City, student at Traverse City Central High School.
n The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Office of Career and Technical Education recently recognized students who demonstrated outstanding achievement in a career choice that is nontraditional for their gender. Three TBAISD Career-Tech Center students were recognized for their leadership and ability to overcome obstacles in diversity as they pursue their career interests. Mariah Holley, Mancelona High School senior, received a Breaking Traditions 2014 Merit Award for high academic success and demonstration of a level of maturity and leadership in culinary arts. Katie Stowe, Traverse City West High School senior, received a Breaking Traditions Recognition Award for displaying academic excellence and an unyielding desire to succeed in the field of public safety and protective services. Tessa Burch, Benzie Central High School senior, received a Breaking Traditions Recognition Award in pursuit of a career in film and new media.
