---- — n St. Mary School-Lake Leelanau had three teams place in the 2014 Trashion Fashion Show held in April. Trashion is an event in which area high school students have the opportunity to design and create a garment made primarily out of materials that would otherwise be thrown away or recycled. Senior Christina Amalfitano placed Overall Third Place with her entry “Paint the Town” dress which used several types of art materials. Two teams tied for the honor of the Completely Trashed Award. They were Mary Rexroat and Brittany Hobbins with “Check this Out,” an outfit created from grocery store items, and Jack Garthe, Dan Duperon, Drew Pobuda and Ryan Schaub created “Sports,” an outfit from old sporting equipment.
n Jennifer Bragiel, 2008 Traverse City West High School graduate, will be graduate from George Washington University in May. She is the daughter of Joseph and Pamela Bragiel.
n Purdue University Ph.D. candidate, Alex Hainen, Traverse City West Senior High School graduate, received a 2014 College of Engineering Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award of $2,000.
n Students from the TBAISD Career Tech Center Manufacturing Technology Academy (MTA) recently took part in the 2014 National Robotics Challenge (NRC) in Marion, Ohio. Manufacturing Robotic Work Cell members were Alexis Archer, of Kalkaska High School, Amanda Lodge, of Glen Lake High School, and Mary Graham, of Forest Area High School. They took three awards with their “Making Melodies” work cell, First Place Gold Award, the Honda Innovation Award Nominee and the Honda Innovation Award Winner. Robot Construction contest members were Austin Oberski, of Frankfort High School, Colton Lowe, of Kingsley High School, and Michael Rosek, of Buckley High School. They took two awards with their “Garden Defender” work cell, First Place Gold Award and the Honda Innovation Award Nominee. Rescue Robot “Snow Leopards” team members, Michael Byard, home schooled, Kevin Kolodziej, of Traverse City West Senior High School, and Joel Zemanek, of Traverse City West Senior High School, took First . Rescue Robot “Team Inferno” team members, Alec Stilwell, of Bellaire High School, Max Casler, of St. Francis High School, and Logan Moore, of Traverse City West Senior High School took Second Place Silver.
n The Zonta Club of Leelanau County awarded scholarships in public affairs to three area students. Megan E. Bordenhagen, of Suttons Bay Public School, received $1,250, will attend Northwestern Michigan College and hopes to become a civil rights lawyer. Hollie Nichole Dowd, of Glen Lake Schools, received $750, hopes to become a physician and be part of Doctors without Borders. Christina Amalfitano, of St. Mary High School, received $500 and hopes to acquire a degree in business and computer graphics.
