n Maya Segal, a Traverse City high school student, has been awarded one of approximately 625 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarships for 2013-2014. The NSLI-Y program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly-taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. The scholarship enables her to study Russian in Russia for the summer and covers all program costs.

n A team from Traverse City East Middle School recently claimed a $1,000 prize for a northwest Michigan competition to create a stroke awareness video. Value Health Partners, a group of seven Michigan health care organizations, including Munson Healthcare, sponsored the competition. Participants were asked to create a 60-second public service video that would help the public easily recall stroke symptoms and know what to do. Winners Chloe Ammond, Maisy Russell and Teal Sikorski are members of teacher Jody Mackey’s media class.

n The MSU Alumni Club of Benzie County recently announced the 2013 scholarship winners. They will be attending Michigan State University in the fall. The Terry Herban Scholarship was awarded to Kristin Smeltzer, of Frankfort-Elberta High School, daughter of Donald Smeltzer and Cindy Koop, of Frankfort. The Donald W. Nugent Scholarship was awarded to Mark A. Gomulinski, of Benzie Central High School, son of Mark and Gina Gomulinski, of Beulah.

n Principal Megan Glynn, of St. Mary School, Lake Leelanau, has selected three students to receive the 2013 Principal’s Awards. These young people were chosen for their active faith, kindness and charity, exemplary work ethic and for being outstanding representatives of their school and church. The students are: Leif Mohrman, 2013 graduate, son of Matt and Cindy Mohrman, of Cedar; Blaise Mork, eighth grade, son of Bill and Veronica Mork, of Suttons Bay; and Lindsey Somero, fifth grade, daughter of Daniel and Marita Somero, of Lake Leelanau.
