The Michigan Department of Treasury’s Section 529 college savings plans, Michigan Education Trust (MET) and Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP), will host an informational seminar to educate parents, grandparents and others about the college savings options available to them through the State of Michigan on Monday, June 23, from 7 to 8 p.m., at Peninsula Community Library, 2699 Island View Road, Traverse City. College savings experts from the Michigan Education Trust will present the tools, resources and choices available to Michigan residents that can help a college savings plan get started.

The Traverse City Education Association (TCEA) awarded three $750 scholarships to children of active TCEA members. This year’s recipients were Ashley L. Smith, TC Central High School, Nicole Lee Sanford, TC West Senior High School, and Taylor Anne Vadeboncoeur, TC West Senior High School.

Kirtland Community College, Roscommon, recently recognized two area graduating students in their 2nd Military Police Basic Training Program, Sean M. Coe, of Grayling, and John D. Scheiding, of Traverse City.

A team of students from Glen Lake High School won the Michigan Envirothon state competition at Lake Ann Camp. The team will represent Michigan at the North American Envirothon held this year in Woodstock, Ill. The Glen Lake team finished first among 22 teams from across the state. Each winning team member received a $2,500 scholarship to both Michigan State University and Lake Superior State University. The team members include Alexander Bennett, Molly Flerlage, Amanda Lodge, Ben Schweikart and Emily Sherwood.

Krystina Hockin, daughter of Tony and Lisa Hockin, of Rapid City, and Sarah Morrison and Joseph Morrison, daughter and son of Dan and Linda Morrison, of Williamsburg, all home school graduates, have excelled in college academics, taking prerequisites at NMC followed by four years in the nursing program at Bethel College in Indiana. They were recently inducted into the National Nursing Honor Society and have graduated from Bethel College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
