- Raymond E. Platts IV, 2009 graduate of Lake Leelanau St. Mary, recently graduated from Adrian College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Military History from the University of Toledo. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and will report to Fort Benning, Ga., for Officer’s Candidate School and Army Ranger School.

- Leslie LaLonde, 2011 Traverse City West Senior High School graduate and current Michigan Tech Bio Medical Engineering student, was accepted for an internship at the University of Hanover in Hanover, Germany. The Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) program offers undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and Europe the chance to work with researchers at Germany’s top research universities and institutions.

- St. Mary School’s chapter of Business Professionals of America had seven students compete at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. Christina Amalfitano placed first in Presentation Management – Individual, and was selected to be the host for the Red Carpet event prior to the awards ceremony. Kaelyn Tarsa placed third in Prepared Speech. Caden Sumner earned his Certiport certification for Microsoft Word. Kevin Schaub, a Northwoods University freshman and 2012 St. Mary School alum, placed first at the collegiate level in Fundamental Spreadsheet Applications and also earned his Certiport certification in Microsoft Excel. Nicole Falkiewicz attended the two-day leadership academy program, served as a photography intern and assisted with organizing the plaques for the award ceremony.

- Elk Rapids Schools recently received their authorization as northern Michigan’s first and only International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for the Middle Years Programme (MYP). This authorization came after three years of training and revamping the approach to teaching and learning. One hundred percent of Elk Rapids Middle School teachers are IB trained and have moved from “sage on the stage to guide on the side” as the IB approach is student-centered and inquiry-based making students responsible for their learning.
