---- — 'Off the Wall' film

ALDEN — "Monsieur Lazhar" is the next film in the "Off the Wall" film series at the Alden District Library.

The 2011 Academy Award-nominated French film will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, March, 7, at the library, 8751 Helena Road. It is rated PG-13. An optional dinner will be served at 6 p.m. For details, call 331-4318.

Reunion for nursing class

TRAVERSE CITY — A meeting will be held Friday, March 8, to plan a 50-year reunion of Northwestern Michigan College's 1963 class of associate degree nurses.

Kits and classes kick off

World dance showcase

TRAVERSE CITY — Raks Incendia will present a World Fusion Dance Showcase on Saturday, March 9.

The family-friendly showcase starts at 8 p.m. at the Children's Montessori House, 5363 N. Long Lake Road. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. It features groups from Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, and Traverse City.

Back Porch concert

CHARLEVOIX — Artist/musician Ryan Luce will be the featured performer at the Saturday, March 9, Back Porch Coffeehouse music event.

Luce will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Charlevoix Senior Center on the corner of Norwood Road. A circle jam session follows. The suggested donation is $5 per person or $10 per family. Proceeds go to the featured performer. Call 622-2944 for details.

Dennos offers workshops

TRAVERSE CITY — The Dennos Museum Center will offer two workshops with local artists in relation to the "Modern Twist: Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Art" exhibit.

Terry Tarnow will offer Bamboo Sock Painting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9. The class fee is $20 for museum members; $25 for non-members. The $12 materials fee includes two pair of bamboo socks. dyes and dye set, brushes, plastic sheets and instructions. Registration is required.

On Saturday, March 16, from 1 to 5 p.m., artist Maryanne Turovaara will lead a "Stitched Bowls and Baskets" class. Participants will learn how to stitch rows of fabric-wrapped clothesline together to create bowls, baskets and purses. The cost is $25 for members; $30 for non-members, plus materials.

St. Paddy's Day 5k

TRAVERSE CITY Registration is under way for the National Cherry Festival's Leapin' Leprechaun St. Paddy's Day 5k foot race.

The race will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 16, in the Warehouse District and will be followed by a "Pure Guinness" Post-Race Party at the tented start area. Racers receive a commemorative T-shirt, accurate timing and results, medals for top finishers and Best Irish Costume, complimentary beverages and entertainment.

New this year, children can run or walk the race route with National Cherry Queen Meg Howard. Participants receive a special edition "Running with Royalty" T-shirt and cherry refreshments at the finish.

Entry fees through March 14 are $33 for adults, $25 for children ages 12 and younger. March 15 and 16, entry fees are $38 for adults and $25 for children.
