Community Cinema

TRAVERSE CITY — “Wonderwomen” is the next film in the Community Cinema Series at Northwestern Michigan College.

The film explores how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxiety about women’s liberation. It will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center, 1410 College Dr. Admission is free. Admission to the museum center galleries also will be free from 5 to 8 p.m.

The film series continues on the first Thursday of the month through June. For details, visit

AAUW scholarship

TRAVERSE CITY — The American Association of University Women Traverse City Area Branch is taking applications for its Minnie Votruba Moore Scholarship.

Applicants for the $1,500 scholarship must have completed two or more years of higher education. They also must be enrolled or will be enrolled full or part time in an accredited program and live in the Grand Traverse region.

The submission deadline is May 4. Applications are available at or by calling 421-3152 and requesting an application.

Lenten fish fry

TRAVERSE CITY — The Immaculate Conception Men’s Club will host fish dinners on Fridays during Lent.

The next meal will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 8, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 720 Second St. Dinners are $10 for adults, $7 for students and free for children 5 and younger. Proceeds benefit the Mother’s Day Banquet and other parish needs.

‘Taste of College’

CHEBOYGAN — North Central Michigan College will offer a “Taste of College” on Wednesday, March 6, at the Straits Area Education Center.

The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. and features 20-minute sampler sessions of popular courses available through NCMC at its new location. Participants may pick one session to attend per time block starting at 5:10 p.m. There also will be refreshments and a short program at 5:30 p.m.
