Lent observed

TRAVERSE CITY — Bethlehem Lutheran Church will begin its Lenten observance with a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper and services on Ash Wednesday.

The meal will start at 6 p.m. today, Feb. 12. Games and mask making will follow. An Ash Wednesday service will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Both the meal and the service will be at the church, 1050 Peninsula Dr.

Benefit aids couple

TRAVERSE CITY — The community is being asked to "show their love" at a Valentine's Day Community fundraiser for Bob Russell and Sally Van Vleck. Russell is battling esophageal cancer and a fire recently damaged the couple's Neahtawanta Inn.

The event will feature music by Seth and May at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, plus a silent auction, at Higher Grounds Roastery, 806 Red Dr. The doors open at 6 p.m.

A $10 donation is requested for admission. All proceeds go to Russell and Van Vleck.

Money for mittens

TRAVERSE CITY — A project proposed by two Career-Tech Center students and adopted by high school students from the CTC Early Childhood Education Program looking for a financial boost.

The fund-raising project, named "Mittens for Mini Michiganders," hopes to raise more than $2,000 by Friday, Feb. 15, to purchase hats, mittens and gloves for youngsters in need.

Fund-raising collection jars have been placed at six local Member's Credit Union branch offices around Traverse City and at Bunting's Market in Cedar.

Proceeds will purchase new hats and mittens to be distributed to regional human services organizations.

Lake City forum

LAKE CITY — "Good Morning Lake City" will be held on Friday, Feb. 15.

The public forum features between 14 and 16 speakers and will be held from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Missaukee County EMS Building on First St. The cost is $2 per person. For details, call 920-9201 or email
