'Friend' weekend

Traverse City — Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1050 Peninsula Dr., is encouraging its members to bring a friend to services today and Sunday, Jan. 19-20.

After the 5 p.m. service on Saturday, there will be a light supper, fellowship and games.

On Sunday, coffee, cookies and conversation follow the 8 a.m. service, with an adult forum and Sunday School at 9:15 a.m. The 10:30 a.m. service will be followed by a light lunch, fellowship and games.

Benefit breakfast

Traverse City — The St. Patrick Men's Club will host a pancake breakfast Sunday, Jan. 20, to benefit Reining Liberty Ranch.

The nonprofit ranch enriches the lives of military veterans and their families through programs like Grand Traverse Horses 4 Heroes.

The meal will be served 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at St. Patrick Church, 630 W. Silver Lake Road. Prices are $5.50 for adults, $3.50 for children 6 and older, free for children 5 and younger; $20 per family. For details, call Alan Staley, 943-8545.

Art demonstrations

Petoskey — Michigan-based artists will give live demonstrations 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 19-March 30, at Sturgeon River Pottery. There is no charge and the public is welcome; call 347-0590.

Empire — In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, admission to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be free on Monday, Jan. 21.

Gun safety program

Traverse City — Missy Smith, creator of "Gun Safe Mom," will offer a free program on gun safety and communication about gun safety and accessibility.

Smith developed "Gun Safe Mom" after learning that her daughter's first play date was at a home that had an unlocked gun. Smith's program includes home safety signs and decals for alerting visiting families that homeowners have a gun safe home and will discuss gun accessibility.

The program starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St. Smith will be joined by local professionals to provide insight on keeping Traverse City a peaceful community.
