Michigan Writers potluck

TRAVERSE CITY — Michigan Writers will host a spring potluck today, April 11, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse, 6726 Center Road.

The 6 p.m. event is open to all Michigan Writers members and anyone interested in learning more about the organization. An open mic reading by members and guests will follow the meal. Participants are encouraged to limit their selection to two minutes. Attendees also should bring a dish to pass.

Water Festival

BENZONIA — The Benzie County Water Festival will open Friday, April 12, at 3:30 p.m. with a performance by The Dread, a band made up of Benzie Central High School students.

The free festival will be held at Benzie Central High School. Highlights also include children's activities from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., panel discussions at 5:30 p.m., and a pizza dinner for purchase from the after-school SEEDS program. Keynote speaker Hans VanSumeren takes the stage at 7 p.m. An 8 p.m. concert by the band Fauxgrass closes the festival.

The public is invited and donations will be accepted to help fund future events.

Volunteers sought

TRAVERSE CITY — Peace Ranch will hold a volunteer orientation Saturday, April 13.

Adults of all ages and youth 13 and older accompanied by a parent are invited to visit the ranch, 2566 Hoosier Valley Road, from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be farm tours and opportunities to sign up to volunteer for summer camp, programs, grounds help and training. For details or if planning to attend, call 499-4736 or email

Pancake breakfast

FIFE LAKE — American Legion Post 219 will sponsor a pancake breakfast to benefit veteran and community programs.

The buffet-style meal will be served 8 a.m.-noon Sunday, April 14, at the post, 10283 M-186. The cost is $6.50 for adults, $4 for children and free for World War II veterans.
