Business opens

Elk Rapids — The Elk Shores Assisted Living Home will open Thursday, Oct. 11, with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m.

The six-bed home provides supportive help and personal care to the elderly. It is located at 215 Rivershore Dr.

Concert in Lake Ann

Lake Ann — Dan Schall of Zelienople, Pa., will share his music and testimony at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Lake Ann United Methodist Church, 6583 First St.

Frankfort festival

Frankfort — The Fall Festival celebration kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, with a parade featuring the Scottville Clown Band.

Following the parade, a variety of activities will take place at the Open Space. The Garden Theater will hold free screenings of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. The festival closes at 3:30 p.m. For details, call 352-7251 or visit

Heritage Day

Empire — The Empire Area Museum Complex will open its doors to the community for Heritage Day.

Candidate forums

Leelanau County — The Leelanau Unit of the League of Women Voters will hold three candidate forums.

A forum for Northport candidates for president, trustee, clerk and treasurer starts at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Leelanau Township Fire Hall, Mill and Eighth Streets, Northport.

A forum for the Board of Commission candidates for Districts 4, 5, 6, and 7 will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the Leelanau County Government Center, Suttons Bay.

A forum for Leelanau Township supervisor and trustee candidates will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Leelanau Township Fire Hall, Northport.

Shelter fundraisers

Kalkaska — NorthWoods Animal Coalition will hold two fundraisers to raise money for the Kalkaska Animal Control Shelter's building fund.

A 5K "Mutt March" on Saturday, Oct. 13, will start with registration at 11:30 a.m. at the Kaliseum Pavilion. A $10 donation per dog is suggested and dogs must be current on vaccinations and on leashes at all times. For details or advance registration, call 645-0007.

Pumpkinfest fun

Traverse City — The Jolly Pumpkin, Peninsula Drive, will host its annual Pumpkinfest on Sunday, Oct. 14.

The noon to 5 p.m. event includes live music, crafts, sack races, a pumpkin trebuchet and a Harvest Buffet. The cost is $15 for adults and $5 for children, which includes the buffet and a Pumpkinfest glass and first beverage. Refills are $2. For details, call 223-4333 or visit

Watershed benefit

Elk Rapids — Reservations are being taken for the Feast of the Watershed.

The Sunday, Oct. 14, benefit for the Watershed Center will be held at Siren Hall, 151 River St. Cocktail hour is at 4 p.m., followed by dinner at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person without beverages, with payment to Siren Hall by credit card or cash through the servers.

Garden club meets

Acme — The public is invited to the Tuesday, Oct. 16, meeting of the Sweetwater Evening Garden Club.

The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the East Bay Masonic Lodge to make Christmas ornaments for the Festival of Trees.

Traverse City — Blackbird Arts will offer individuals of all ages the chance to create a personalized clay Jack-O-Lantern in a class on Friday, Oct. 19.

Art grant deadline

Elk Rapids — Thursday, Nov. 1, is the final day to submit applications for Art Rapids! grant funds to be used in support of arts-related projects and programs in the Elk Rapids community.

Community groups, art-minded citizens, teachers, schools, parent groups and student groups are eligible to submit applications.

Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by early December and grant activity must be completed by June 30, 2013.

Garden workshops

Kalkaska — Klumpp Flower Shop will offer free Fairy Garden workshops.

Workshops will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 13, at the flower shop, 210 N. Cedar St.
