Writers open house

Traverse City — Traverse City Area Public Schools will hold an open house and student readings for its Front Street Writers Program, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the writing studio, 123 W. Front Street. Community members, students, staff, and families are invited to join Front Street Writers student readers for spoken word poetry, fiction excerpts, conversation and refreshments.

'Rock the Rock'

Kingsley — Junior high and high school students are invited to "Rock" The Rock of Kingsley Youth Center on Saturday, Jan. 26.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Rock of Kingsley, 115 E. Blair St. AlltheMore and Artisan Ocean will give a free concert and there will be games, prizes and a dance party. For details, call 263-7000 or visit http://www.therockofkingsley.com.

ACT test prep class

Traverse City — Northwestern Michigan College will offer two options of an ACT Test preparation course.

The classes are designed to help familiarize students with the test, provide practice, build confidence and reduce test anxiety.

One option will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. five Tuesdays from Jan. 29 to Feb. 26, in room 101 at NMC's Great Lakes Campus, 715 E. Front St. The cost is $265.

A four-week option will be offered starting Tuesday, Feb. 5. This course skips the diagnostic exam, which takes place the first day of the Jan. 29 class. The cost is $235

'Unite' youth event

Williamsburg — Traverse Area Youth Ministries will host an area-wide event with musicians AlltheMore and speaker Chris Emery.

The event will be hosted from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at New Hope Community Church, 5100 Bethesda Ct. Admission is free.

Traverse City — Artwork by Glenn Wolff is on display through January in the Towsley Lobby at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St.

Wolff's art may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The art of Eleonora Hayes will be on display during February.

The Opera House displays work by a different artist each month. They are selected by committee and the art is displayed at no charge. Interested artists should call 941-8082 for an application and details.

Blues concert

Traverse City — Tickets are on sale for "Blues at the Crossroads 2: Muddy & the Wolf" featuring the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St. Tickets range from $28 to $43; call 941-8082 or visit www.cityoperahouse.org.

Art Rapids grants

Elk Rapids — Art Rapids has awarded grants totaling $4,000 for 2012-13.

Grant recipients include: Elk Rapids High School, Cherryland Middle School, Elk Rapids High School Zero Hour Jazz Lab, local artist/educator Patricia Innis, and Walk of Art.

Enrollment meetings

Traverse City — The Grand Traverse Academy, 1245 Hammond Road East, is holding enrollment information meetings for the 2013-14 school year.

Meetings are being held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30; 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, with emphasis on kindergarten; 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18; 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, with emphasis on grades seven-12; 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27; 1:15 p.m. Monday, March 4; 6 p.m. Thursday, March 7, with emphasis on grades seven-12; 6 p.m. Thursday, March 14; and 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 19.

Open enrollment continues through Wednesday, March 20. If applications exceed positions available, a random lottery will be held Thursday, March 21.

Stories 'for the birds'

Traverse City — Preschool children, their caregivers, families and friends are invited to a special Wigglers Story Time with stories "for the birds" at the East Bay Branch Library, 1989 Three Mile Road.

Story time starts at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30. It includes a filmstrip story, songs, crafts and snacks.
