SCOTTVILLE — A one-day conference invites the community to take a closer look at their daily bread from cultural, physical, social and recreational perspectives. The registration deadline is Friday.

“Food for Thought” will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the West Shore Community College Administrative and Conference Building, 3000 N. Stiles Road. It will highlight Michigan businesses that value sustainability in practice. There will be student presentations on food and water topics, community panels, lunch prepared by the college’s catering service and more.

Garden volunteers

TRAVERSE CITY — Children’s Garden volunteers and potential volunteers are invited to a meeting today to help plan for the 2014 growing season.

Anyone interested in volunteering to teach or help maintain the gardens is invited to the 7 p.m. meeting at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. For details, call 929-0916.


TRAVERSE CITY — Tickets are on sale for an outdoor concert on Saturday, July 19, by the Traverse Symphony Orchestra.

TSO@theCommons will feature the largest orchestra of the TSO season performing a program of high-energy musical favorites under a tent on the lawn at the Grand Traverse Commons. Concert-goers will experience a picnic atmosphere with pre-concert touring musical entertainment and local food and wine from the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas.

General admission tickets are $35 each. VIP tickets are $95 and include a covered dining area, cocktail tables, upgraded restrooms, a hydration station, backstage viewing, local nibbles and more. For details or tickets, visit

Torch area potluck

EASTPORT — All Torch area residents are invited to the Upper Torch Lake Association’s next potluck dinner on Monday

A social hour starts at 6 p.m. at the Torch Lake Township Community Services building, followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a favorite beverage, table service, and a dish to share along with a list of its ingredients.
