---- — Carol Tompkins-Parker of Traverse City called and wanted to publicly thank motorist Lisa Lyon and BATA driver Miles Barnes for their help when she fell just steps from the BATA stop at 14th and Pine streets.
Carol uses BATA exclusively during the winter and was about 10 steps from the stop when she slipped and fell, dislocating her knee and breaking her kneecap.
Lisa stopped and called 911 and about five minutes later the Grand Traverse Mall route bus Carol would have gotten on came and driver Miles stopped at the intersection to stop traffic.
He also stayed until the ambulance came.
“It was so nice to have Lisa run over and call 911,” Carol said, noting that many cars just drove right past. “Lisa and Miles need to be recognized for what they did. They both went above and beyond.”

Traverse Health Clinic recently gifted a number of patients with new smiles through its Heaven D.E.N.T. volunteer weekend.
The event was started two years ago by David Swan, DDS, who heard there were a number of patients at the clinic in need of dentures. Determined to provide a solution, Dr. Swan enlisted the help of Doug Baker, founder of D.H. Baker Dental Laboratory.
Together they rallied a number of well-established dental professionals, resulting in Heaven D.E.N.T. (Delighting the Edentulous with New Teeth).
On a Saturday in February, Traverse Dental Associates and eight dentists provided 19 patients with either full or partial dentures.
Participating dentists included Drs. Ron Chao, Stephen Dewey, Macaire Lumbrezer, Heather Pfefferle, Peter Piche, Dave Swan, Josh VanHorn and Phil Yacho.
These doctors also enlisted 17 staff volunteers. Other collaborators included the following dental technicians - Jan Babel, Maureen Hubbell, Terry Lalonde, Colleen Lavack, Matt LaVack, Matt Mrozkowski, Megan Sheets, Beth Webster, Valerie Workman, plus four dental students.
The non-dental community also helped out, with Old Mission Multigrain and Big Apple Bagel providing soup and bread for the volunteers and patients.
