TRAVERSE CITY — The Maritime Heritage Alliance will host a winter open house on Thursday, Jan. 9.

The event will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Edwin and Mary Brown Boat Shop (building one) at the MHA, 13268 S. West Bay Shore Dr. Visitors can tour the wooden boat restoration facilities and the new Modeler’s Shop, see a traditional marlinspike and boat-building demonstration, and learn about upcoming crew training classes for crewing on MHA’s Tall Ship Madeline. Diabetes workshop

GAYLORD — The Otsego County Commission on Aging will sponsor a diabetes self-management workshop.

The” Personal Action Toward Health (PATH)” workshop will meet from 1:30-4 p.m. six Thursdays, Jan. 9-Feb. 13, at Otsego Memorial Hospital’s conference room, 825 N. Center Ave. The cost is $20; free with a voucher. Individuals should ask about vouchers when registering.

Relief benefit

TRAVERSE CITY — K Jones and the Benzie Playboys and the True Falsettos will join their talents in a benefit for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Visayas region of the Philippines.

Music will start at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Right Brain Brewery, 225 E. 16th St. Donations will be accepted at the door and Right Brain Brewery will donate $1 from every pint sold to the effort. Proceeds will go toward providing clean water, food, hygiene materials, lumber and immunizations to Filipino families affected by the typhoon.

Brewery tours

TRAVERSE CITY — The TC Ale Trail is partnering with Celtic Shuttles to offer VIP Brewery Tours to almost all of Traverse City’s craft breweries.

Three four-hour tours are available and include a tasting at each brewery, snacks, a commemorative TC Ale Trail growler including discounted fills at participating breweries, transportation and a knowledgeable tour guide. Upcoming tours start at 1 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 11 and 25, from the Eighth Street Parking Deck, 125 E. Eighth St.

Winter Trails Day

TRAVERSE CITY — TART Trails, the Vasa Ski Club, Einstein Cycles and Timber Ridge Resort are teaming up to sponsor Winter Trails Day.

Free trail access, introductory ski lessons, fatbike demonstrations, guided snowshoe hikes and use of equipment for those new to winter trail sports will be available from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Timber Ridge Resort, 4050 Hammond Road. Equipment will be available on a first come, first served basis starting at 10:30 a.m. A driver’s license is required to check out equipment. Introductory ski lessons start at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., while snowshoe hikes will start at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.

Free cookies and cocoa will be served in the lodge and chili will be available to purchase. The event is free, however registration is required either in advance at or at the event. In case of weather that requires cancellation, TART Trails will post notice on its website and Facebook page.
