Cooking classes

TRAVERSE CITY — A three-part series of cooking classes will be held at The BOX, 425 Boardman Ave.

Classes meet at noon for three Saturdays, Jan. 4-18. Themes and presenters include Chef Guillaume Haziel-Massieux of LaBecasse in Glen Arbor, who will create French-inspired Caribbean food. Chef Pete Peterson will prepare a several-course dinner menu of dishes inspired by his interaction with acclaimed chefs and global cuisines, and Chef Myles Anton of Trattoria Stella will butcher half a pig into the parts needed for classic Italian preparations and cycle through several dishes according to the individual cuts.

The cost is $100 per person and classes are limited to 12 participants. For details, call 218-4855 or email info@theboxtc.com.

Breakfast series

GAYLORD — World traveler Tom Birgy will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Jan. 9, Educational Breakfast Series sponsored by the Otsego County Commission on Aging.

Birgy’s program “Wide World of Travel” will be presented from 9-11 a.m. at the University Center at Gaylord, 80 Livingston Blvd. The $5 suggested donation includes breakfast. For details or reservations, contact Michelle Dunkelberg, (989) 748-4068 or michelle@occoaonline.org.

Book club meets

ALDEN — The Books and Brie Book Club will meet on Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Alden District Library.

The group will discuss “Zealot” by Resa Aslan at 3:30 p.m. at the library, 8751 Helena Road. The public is welcome. For details, call 331-4318.

Local authors exhibit

TRAVERSE CITY — A new exhibit at the Traverse City Visitor Center gallery spotlights the works of many local authors and illustrators.

“Cuddle Up with a Book” is a cozy winter display arranged around an easy chair, fireplace and Christmas tree. It features dozens of books by local novelists, historians, outdoor writers and children’s authors. The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 28 at the visitor center, 101 W. Grandview Parkway. Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. For details, call 947-0692.
