Fire Safety 101
ACME — The Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department and Traverse City Area Public Schools’ International School at Bertha Vos are teaming up to present a program titled “Home Fire Safety 101 and How to Create a Home Escape Plan.”
The program will be offered at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the International School. The school’s Chinese instructor, Yiling Liu, will translate both presentations into Mandarin Chinese. There also will be children’s activities, refreshments and a drawing. TRAVERSE CITY — The third annual “Dreamroom Classic” to benefit Child and Family Services will be hosted on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.
Five celebrity pairs worked with Golden Fowler Home Furnishing designers to create the rooms of their dreams. Attendees at the event and anyone who visits the store in advance can buy $1 votes to cast for their favorite dream room.
The main event will be held from 5:30-9 p.m. at Golden Fowler on South Garfield Avenue. The cost is $25 per person or $40 per couple and includes live music, food, wine and craft beer. New this year is a Chairs for Children silent auction featuring chairs hand-painted by area artists.

TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse Show Chorus will deliver singing Valentine’s on Friday, Feb. 14.
Quartets from the chorus will travel within a 20-mile radius around Traverse City to deliver a love song, a Valentine card, chocolate and a photo to commemorate the event. The cost is $45. Weekend Valentines also are available on request.

Shiver by the River
FRANKFORT — The sixth annual Shiver by the River will be held at various locations Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 15-16.
Snocross practice and qualifying start the activities on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Open Space Park. Activities also include the Betsie Bay Frozen 5K, the Winter Parade, children’s games and activities, an antique snowmobile display, horse-drawn carriage rides, a chili cook-off, and more.

GLEN ARBOR — The 14th annual Glen Arbor Winterfest will be hosted Saturday, Feb. 15.
The day opens at 7 a.m. with the start of the perch fishing contest. The entry fee is $20 and all ages are welcome. Participants should bring their biggest catches from Big and Little Glen Lakes to the Sportsman Shop at 1 p.m., where the winners will be crowned.
A chili cook-off takes place on the deck at Boonedocks, with local businesses and individuals competing for chili bragging rights. Admission is $10 per person which includes unlimited chili samples and the opportunity to vote for the winners. The entry fee is $25 per chili and the winners will be crowned as the event concludes about 3 p.m.

GLEN ARBOR — The Glen Arbor Art Association is accepting applications for its Artist-in-Residence program and the 2014 Gallery Show cycle.
The artist residencies are two weeks in length and are offered throughout the year. A detailed prospectus describing the program also is available on the website. The application deadline is Saturday, Feb. 15.
Gallery shows are open to GAAA members and are offered on eight weekends in July and August. The deadline for submitting applications for the 2014 cycle is Saturday, March 1.
