---- — Snowshoe hike

BENZONIA —District Forester Kama Ross will lead a snowshoe hike focusing on identifying trees in the winter.

The hike will be held from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 22, at Railroad Point Natural Area on Mollineaux Road. All ages are welcome. Participants should bring their snowshoes.

Haas christens piano

TRAVERSE CITY — Jeff Haas will celebrate the arrival of his father’s seven-foot concert grand piano with an evening of jazz on Friday, Feb. 21, at the Grand Traverse Circuit, 225 W. 14th St.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and features Haas, Jack Dryden on bass, Randy Marsh on drums and watercolorist Lisa Flahive at the easel. TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District Career-Tech Center Manufacturing Technology Academy will hold a student/parent information night on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The meeting is for current high school sophomores and juniors from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties and their parents.

The meeting will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Northwestern Michigan College Parsons-Stulen Building, 2600 Aero Park Dr. Students interested in engineering, robotics, management, product design or other technology-related professions are encouraged to attend.

Picnic at the Opera

TRAVERSE CITY — The Picnic at the Opera series concludes Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St.

The live variety show will be hosted from noon-1 p.m. by Miriam Pico and WTCM FM’s Jamie Kramer. Drive South will be the musical guest with guest performer Ben Whiting. Paul Welch is the scheduled guest visual artist and Haystacks will provide fashion show items. The show also features poetry commentary by Michael Delp and music by keyboardist David Chown.

Admission is free and the audience may bring sack lunches. Donations to support the Opera House also are appreciated. The show will be broadcast live on UpNorth TV cable channels 97 and 992 and streamed live on www.upnorthmedia.org. Recorded episodes will repeat each week on the cable channels and will be available on demand at the website.
