TRAVERSE CITY — The West Senior High School physics class will launch a weather balloon on Wednesday, May 22.

Set up with start at 8 a.m. near the sport fields at the school, with launch estimated to be between 10 and 11 a.m. The balloon will record temperatures, pressures and wind speed as it travels more than 100,000 feet into the atmosphere.

Boosters’ concert

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Music Boosters’ annual Benefit Concert will start at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, in Central High School’s gym, 1150 Milliken Dr.

Students from East and West middle schools and Central and West Senior high schools will perform and the 2013 scholarship winners will be announced. For details, call Eileen Mikulski, 590-1075. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

Library plant sale

INTERLOCHEN — The Friends of the Interlochen Public Library will hold a plant sale Saturday, May 25, at Ric’s Corner, U.S. 31 and M-137.

Hanging baskets, annuals, perennials and geraniums will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds support the library’s children’s programs and activities. For details, call the library, 276-6767, or visit

At Sleeping Bear

EMPIRE — Park Ranger-led programs will be featured Memorial Day weekend at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The hands-on “Heroes of the Storm” program will be presented at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26, at the Maritime Museum in Glen Haven, where visitors can tour the museum.

Programs on Saturday, May 25, include “Picture Perfect Sleeping Bear” at 4 p.m. at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire with a review of photography basics followed by a trip to the Empire Bluff trail to learn how to get the most from your camera; and “Lighthouses: Lore and Legend” at 7 p.m. at the Platte River Campground Amphitheater featuring stories of the role lighthouses have played in the history of the United States.

Sunday, May 26, is for the birds. The day starts with an 8:30 a.m. ranger-led bird walk at Esch Beach and ends at 7 p.m. with a program on the owls of Sleeping Bear Dunes at the Platte River Campground amphitheater.
