Boardman blocked in some areas

---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Paddlers who plan to get out on the Boardman River this weekend should expect to hoof it in some sections.

The Grand Traverse Conservation District and volunteers have been working to clear downed trees from the section of the river below the Forks State Forest Campground, said Steve Largent, the district's Boardman River program coordinator.

"This happens every spring," Largent said. "A tree can fall at any point in time, but especially after winter, when the weight of the snow will bring down these weak trees."

Largent said volunteers, including some from the Grand Traverse Area Paddle Club, hope to have the river cleared by next weekend. In the meantime, Largent said, "If people do decide to paddle the Boardman, they are going to potentially encounter these areas where they're going to have to portage.”
