What to see before the Oscars

TRAVERSE CITY — Here are some of the Oscar-nominated films you shouldn’t miss before the March 2 awards ceremony.

“American Hustle”: Leading the pack with 10 nominations is David O. Russell’s melodrama about scam artists who make unlikely partners for one unusual FBI agent. It has a contender in every acting category, the only film of the year to do so. You can see it at the Bijou by the Bay and Horizon Cinema.

“Gravity”: Also with 10 nominations is the compact movie. The 91-minute space drama is also up for directing and editing so it’s a big contender.

“12 Years a Slave”: The period drama about a free man who is sold into slavery has a whopping nine nominations, including directing, editing and several acting nominations.

“Dallas Buyer’s Club”: Matthew McConaughey is nominated for his effort in the film where he portrays a man stricken with AIDS who works to help other people suffering from the disease. It’s also up for an editing nomination, making it a serious contender for best picture. It’s playing now at Horizon Cinema.

“Captain Phillips”: Tom Hanks may have missed out on a nomination for playing the captain taken hostage but that doesn’t mean this movie isn’t a major player. It nabbed six nominations including best picture and best supporting actor and a best editing nomination.

Other nominees playing in the area: “Wolf of Wall Street” and “Her” are playing at Horizon Cinemas; “August: Osage County,” “Frozen” and “Saving Mr. Banks” all play at Grand Traverse while “Saving Mr. Banks” also is showing at the State Theatre.
