OTP presents Neil Simon short stories

TRAVERSE CITY — Old Town Playhouse presents Neil Simon's comedy, "The Good Doctor," opening today and running select dates through Dec. 15 in its Studio Theatre at the Depot.

Neil Simon adopts the style of 19th-century Russian author Anton Chekhov's short stories to create a series of tales woven together by The Writer/Narrator, who states in the opening, "Here I am, day after day, haunted by one thought, I must write, I must write, I must write."

"The Good Doctor" was first presented on Broadway in 1973 as a series of sketches celebrating Chekhov's short stories. Accounts of Chekhov describe him as writing every spare moment and completing stories in a single evening after a full day working at his physician's practice. Simon is also often cited for always carrying scripts in progress, and furiously writing and editing right up to final rehearsals. Both present comedies depicting human nature.

Performances are Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available by calling 947-2210 or may be purchased online at www.oldtownplayhouse.com. Get them in person at the Old Town Playhouse box office, 148 East Eighth. Any remaining seats will be sold one hour before performances.

The Studio Theatre at the Depot is located at 620 Railroad Place, at the southwest corner of East 8th Street and Woodmere.
