Weekend in Brief: 11/29/2013

Holiday train display

ELK RAPIDS — A lighted village and HO scale model train display will open to the public at noon today.

The winter-themed display features three track loops, a mountain village, bridges and about 40 lighted buildings. There also will be a student display and Harbor Days Carnival layouts. Exhibit hours are noon-5 p.m. Friday through Sunday through Christmas at 138 River St. Santa will make an appearance at 1 p.m. Dec. 7. The exhibit is hosted by the Historic Elk Rapids Town Hall Association.

Festival of Trees

BENZONIA — Habitat for Humanity’s Festival of Trees will be held at the Benzie Area Historical Museum, 6941 Traverse Ave.

The festival features more than 50 locally decorated wreaths and trees, which will be sold by silent auction to benefit Habitat for Humanity. The auction also will have a “Buy It Now” option.

Festival hours are noon-6 p.m. today and Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday. In addition, Amy Ferris will read Trumane Capote’s “A Christmas Memory” at 4 p.m. Saturday and visitors are invited to view a special exhibit at the museum commemorating the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

Admission is by donation and proceeds will be shared by the museum and Habitat for Humanity.

Art Fair

ONEKAMA — The Portage Lake Holiday Art Fair will be held Saturday.

The fair will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Farr Center on M-22. It will feature local artists and hourly prize drawings. Lunch will be available to purchase from the Glenwood Restaurant.

Musical concert

LELAND — The W. T. Best Theater at the Old Art Building, 111 Main St., will be the site of a concert featuring two musical groups.

Indie/Pop/Folk duo The Accidentals and Grand Rapids folk trio Bennett will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students. To reserve tickets, call 256-2131. Tickets also will be available at the door.
