Titans win regional crown

From staff reports

MOUNT PLEASANT — It was another trophy night in what is becoming a special season for the Traverse City West Titans.

After a sluggish start, it was all West on Thursday.

“We started slow again, but we came back and capitalized on everything,” Titans coach Emily Baumann said. “They tipped on us and we did not let a ball fall in the first two games. It was like, ‘keep tipping, keep tipping’ because we picked everything up. We were ready to roll.

“We just played awesome defense, and we were swinging so hard on offense. That helped because we got them off their game by serving aggressively and hitting aggressively.”

Katie Placek had a big night for West with 20 kills, three aces and 14 digs. Anna O’Hara added 12 kills and two aces. Kimmy Bilinski and Olivia Bishop contributed five kills apiece. Ally Peters chipped in six digs, Bilinski and Mattie Mokanyk five apieve. Mokanyk also had 36 assists and three kills.

“Their energy was so high tonight,” Baumann said. “They were all together as a team. It was an awesome win.”

The Titans have now won 15 games in a row in five tournament outings,.

“We’re definitely peaking at the right time,” Baumann said. “We are playing so well right now. That’s so awesome. It’s happening when it should be happening.”

West reached the state semifinals in 2005 during Baumann’s first stint as coach.

Northville is ranked No. 6 in Class A in the latest coaches association poll. The Mustangs breezed through their regional as well, sweeping Fenton and White Lake Lakeland.
