Police may have lead in Boyce investigation

---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Police may have a lead in the weeks-long Kelly Ann Boyce hit-and-run death investigation.

Traverse City Police Capt. Mike Ayling said detectives spent the past two weeks investigating a tip about a man who splits his time between Traverse City and Ossineke in Alpena County. Police received about 600 tips in the weeks after an unknown motorist killed Boyce, 29, on July 5.

“This is one of 600 tips we haven’t been able to discredit yet,” Ayling said.

Detectives from both Traverse City and Alpena conducted several hours of interviews and executed at least five search warrants on vehicles associated with the man. Ayling emphasized police continue to pursue other tips and haven’t narrowed the investigation’s focus, but some evidence on the tip is “really damning.”

But he said other evidence doesn’t place the man in the 600 block of Washington Street on the night Boyce rode her bicycle home, was struck and dragged screaming under a vehicle for more than a block to a Railroad Street alleyway.

“What we’re trying to do is corroborate some of the supposed alibis,” he said.

Alying said the tip was forwarded to two places; a “witness” who placed calls to Traverse City Police later contacted Michigan State Police in Alpena about the case. Troopers at the Alpena Michigan State Police post declined to comment beyond saying they’re coordinating the case with Traverse City authorities.

Witnesses on the night of Boyce’s death reported they saw a dark pickup truck or SUV drive away from the scene. Ayling said vehicles they can connect to the man don’t match witness descriptions, but he noted it’s difficult to distinguish vehicle colors in the 600 block of Washington Street at night.

There is a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in the hit-and-run. Ayling said investigators spent at least two hundred man hours on the tip, but interest in Alpena County man “certainly doesn’t mean (the case) is closed by any means.”

Members of the public with information that may be related to the Boyce case are asked to contact the Traverse City Police Department at 231-995-5152 or the anonymous tip line at 231-947-TIPS (8477).
