Greys defeat Bums, 5-0

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City let one go Thursday.

But the Beach Bums hope to get some back today.

After dropping a 5-0 decision to the Frontier Greys, the Beach Bums will get center fielder Scott Woodward and shortstop Andrew Cohn back into the lineup.

Both have been on the injured list for over a month.

Both suited up Thursday, but did not see game action. To make room for the pair to be activated from the disabled list, the Beach Bums released outfielder D’Marcus Ingram and reliever Jason Mattila. Woodward was hitting .360 and Cohn .308 before their injuries.

“I think this is really the deepest team we’ve ever had,” TC manager Gregg Langbehn said. “We’ve got some interchangeable parts.”

The Beach Bums (29-19) played well defensively for large parts of Thursday’s game, but two costly errors led to four of the Greys’ five runs.

Frontier’s Matt Costello came into the game with a 1-4 record and 4.68 earned-run average, but stifled TC’s offense that had scored 12 runs in winning the first two games of the series.

“He threw well, kept them off balance,” Greys manager Brent Matheny said. “He’s not going to blow up the radar gun. But he kept them off balance, threw enough fastballs to make them respect that and then threw the good change-up to have them roll over that. Even more importantly, he throw strikes.”

The Greys took a 3-0 lead in the second when Taylor Wrenn’s throw to Still at second for what appeared to be a tailor-made double play was high and ended up as a three-base error that ended up allowing two runs to score. Another came in later in the frame on a groundout.

“We had a lead-off walk in that inning, and we had an 0-2 count on him,” Langbehn said. “We just didn’t execute, that’s the bottom line. We had several unearned runs throughout the night. We didn’t play good. We didn’t have an answer for their pitcher.”
