Guns, valuables stolen in separate break-ins

TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputies are investigating thefts of guns and other valuable items from two separate break-ins.

An Acme Township man reported three guns stolen from his home on Angell Road between April 24 and April 29. There was no forced entry and the homeowner said he never locks the residence, Capt. Randy Fewless said.

The stolen firearms are a Buffalo Bill Cody Winchester .30-30 with a gold dollar on it and a buttstock; a 50-caliber Thompson muzzleloader with a scope and black synthetic stock; and a Remington 12-gauge shotgun. The homeowner said the weapons were in a safe, and the key was left in the lock.

A change jar with a small amount of money also was taken.

Five or six long guns and other valuables were stolen during another break-in on Curtis Road in Blair Township. Fewless said there is no immediate evidence that links the two incidents. Deputies have not identified any suspects, he said.

A thief or thieves ransacked the Curtis Road home sometime during the past two weeks. The homeowners were away, and their daughter recently checked on the home and found the front door window smashed.

In addition to the stolen guns, other missing items include a coin and stamp collection; an expensive belt buckle collection; and antique guitars. Jerseys were taken from a Red Wings hockey memorabilia collection. Family jewelry boxes were looted.

Fewless said the suspect may have known the victims. The couple’s daughter said it seemed personal.

She went through the home with a deputy. She was surprised some items were carefully moved and not broken. Family photos were removed from the walls, and at least one was taken. She estimated the stolen property totaled $10,000.

Her parents are devastated, she said.

“I felt so violated for them that somebody would go in and destroy their world,” she said. “We can’t get that jewelry back.”
