— TRAVERSE CITY—Utility workers are still working to clear U.S. 31 North of a downed power pole and two others poles leaning over the highway near Four Mile Road.
The road was shut down this morning, forcing cars to turn around, and Traverse City Light and Power has turned power off to the downed lines. The problem was apparently caused by a car hitting one of the utility poles. A nearby condominium complex lost power, said Traverse City Light and Power officials.
The “winter medley” of freezing rain and wind created ultra-slippery roads, isolated power outages, and closed nearly all the schools in the five-county region.
The Benzie County Water Festival was canceled due to road conditions.
Leelanau County saw the most power outages, including 60 homes in the Northport area and another 25 in Suttons Bay. Power may not return until Saturday morning, said Consumers Energy spokesman Roger Morgenstern.
Another 10 homes are out in Kingsley, he said.
