NMC Jazz Festival

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College will host the inaugural NMC Jazz Festival featuring the college’s three jazz ensembles along with professional performers and area high school jazz bands. The festival includes two separate showcase concerts.

On Saturday NMC’s big band and vocal jazz ensemble will open for Walter White’s Small Meadium @Large at Milliken Auditorium, 1410 College Drive. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $20 each. For tickets, visit www.mynorthtickets.com or www.dennosmuseumorg, or call the Milliken box office, 995-1553.

On Sunday in conjunction with the NMC Barbecue, high school bands from Forest Area Schools, Elk Rapids High School and Kingsley High School will perform throughout the day, followed by the NMC Jazz Lab Band and a faculty group. The performance will be held in Milliken Auditorium and admission is free.

Cherry Festival tickets

TRAVERSE CITY — Tickets to the 2014 National Cherry Festival events go on sale via a web portal at www.cherryfestival.org.

Ticketed events include a new series of four food and four wine events as well as the Bay Side Music performances. The festival runs July 5-12 and includes performances by bands like Collective Soul, Here Come the Mummies, Gin Blossoms, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Ryan Whyte Maloney and Justin Moore.

Ticket prices vary, but cost as little as $10 for general admission to some events. For more information, go to the festival’s website.

 

Children’s Garden plant sale

TRAVERSE CITY — Children’s Garden volunteers will hold a plant sale to help the garden, located behind the Traverse Area District Library, be successful this season. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the front lawn of the library, 610 Woodmere Ave. For details, call 947-0422.

 

NMC Barbecue

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College’s 59th annual Barbecue will be held Sunday on main campus.
