Sports in Brief: Montrose captures top honors

EAST LANSING — Montrose High School captured first place in two of five individual categories in the inaugural MHSAA School Broadcast Program Excellence Awards, and with it the “Program of the Year” honor.

Montrose took first place in two categories: Best Multicamera Production for a basketball game against Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary; and Best Produced Commercial/Feature for a public service announcement about texting while driving. The program also demonstrated during the year a good blend of productions in a variety of sports covered and an overall command of the PlayOn! Sports software used for graphics and inserting commercials during the course of productions.

Petoskey earned a second and a third place award, taking second in the Best Single Camera Production with PlayOn! Graphics category and third in the Best use of PlayOn! Graphics/Software for a girls volleyball match with Ogemaw Heights.

Johannesburg-Lewiston was second for Best Multicamera Production from a girls basketball game vs. Gaylord St. Mary, while Charlevoix earned a second place for Best Produced Commercial/Feature for its Classroom electives offerings promo.

EAST LANSING: More tools to assist administrators in managing student transfers, including stiffer penalties for students switching schools for athletic-related reasons and for adults influencing those decisions, highlighted actions taken by the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association during its annual Spring Meeting, May 4-5, in Gaylord.

The Council built on changes to the MHSAA transfer regulation adopted at its 2013 Spring Meeting that increased the period of ineligibility to 180 days for a student making an athletic-related transfer, detailing more activities – centered on athletes following their non-school coach to a new school – that would lead automatically to the longer period of ineligibility even if not reported by the school losing the student.

Most notably, the maximum penalty of ineligibility for students and suspension for coaches partaking in undue influence was increased from up to one year to up to four years.
