Glen Arbor pharmacy closing

GLEN ARBOR — Hometown Pharmacy in Glen Arbor will permanently close after April 30.

“After the local doctor’s decision to retire, our business took a marked decrease in prescription volume,” said Anna Rider, vice president of Hometown Pharmacy. “The sustainability of the store, right at the present time, didn’t look like it could be regained. That’s why we had to go ahead and make this difficult decision.”

Glen Arbor doctor Matthew Houghton closed his practice this year.

“It’s really going to be difficult for Glen Arbor to not have a pharmacy,” said Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce receptionist Dotti Thompson. “We’re all just terribly disappointed.”

Hometown Pharmacy, a Newaygo-based company that owns more than 30 pharmacies in the state, bought the Prescription Shop pharmacies in Glen Arbor, Honor, Suttons Bay and Traverse City last year. Rider said the company has no plans to close other locations.

Glen Arbor Hometown Pharmacy customers can have their prescriptions delivered for free on Thursdays, or use other local pharmacies.

“That’s going to be difficult if you’ve gone to the doctor and you need something immediately,” Thompson said. “You either are going to have to run into Honor and get it filled, or you’ll have to change over to a pharmacy in Traverse City.”

Thompson expects residents to use pharmacies closer to Traverse City doctors.

“I am assuming that mostly everyone will probably switch to someplace close to where their doctor is,” Thompson said. “We don’t have a doctor in Glen Arbor, so I’d guess Traverse City is going to get most of our business.”

Rider said the three Glen Arbor Hometown Pharmacy employees will move to other locations.
