---- — Not listening?

Your “Our View” editorial of May 17 amazed me. You said “Obama must set the tone.” Have you not been listening to our president for the last five years? His tone has been very consistent. Any questioning or criticism is dismissed as “politically motivated” or racist. Conservatives are to be marginalized by any means, whether by personal attacks (on issues real or fabricated) or by general attitudes (Tea Party people are on a par with terrorists as a threat to our nation).

Obama has already set the tone ... his followers are only answering the call.

We have been duped

In reply to a recent letter, I am a part-time resident of both Michigan and Ohio, both states with high unemployment. It’s important that one look behind the reported unemployment figure. Yes, it has fallen to 7.5 percent; however, the labor participation rate is a much better indicator of the job market. The labor participation rate is only a little over 58 percent, nowhere near where it was before 2008. In regards to the stock market and record highs, the reason is simple, artificially low interest rates. The $80 billion per money printing policy of the Fed may hold rates down for a while but watch the market crash when it’s withdrawn. This policy has devaluated our currency, and that is the primary reason why gasoline currently sells for $3.50 to $4 a gallon. To put it bluntly, there is little hope and no change, and we all have been duped.
