---- — Outrageous outsourcing

It was with utter disbelief I read on July 13, in the Record-Eagle that the Michigan Economic Development Corporation chose to outsource the editorial production, design, printing and partial distribution of the Pure Michigan Travel Guide to a firm in Iowa. I am appalled by their actions. Surely they could have found a Michigan company to do the job. It feels like a slap in the face to every Michigan resident by telling us we’re not good enough to do the job. MEDC, it’s Pure Michigan, not pure Iowa.

Spread word on brine

We should all be appalled to learn of the toxic brine spread on Benzie County roads by Team Services out of Kalkaska (the same company used by Grand Traverse County). This brine contained high levels of BTEX (Benzene, known carcinogen-Toluene-Ethylbenzene-Xylene). My suspicion is that these are fracking fluids coming from the Kalkaska County well sites. So many people are unaware of what fracking is (extraction of natural gas) and how the process contaminates our air and ground water, or the fact that it is happening right now in many locations across northern Michigan with many more wells proposed. I would urge anyone who does not know about fracking to watch the documentary films, “Gasland” (through the Traverse Area District Library or as an instant video through, “Gasland 2” (on HBO) or Google “fracking.” This incident is a forewarning of more to come if we don’t take a stand. Let’s speak up and spread the word.
