Brian Wilson plays at Kresge Tuesday night

INTERLOCHEN — The Beach Boys 50th anniversary reunion tour ended on a dissonant note last fall in London.

But the audience at Interlochen’s Kresge Auditorium can expect that iconic Beach Boys sound and more Tuesday night when Brian Wilson and his band take the stage with special guests Al Jardine and David Marks.

The opening act is Wilson-Phillips, a vocal group made up of Wilson’s daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson, plus Chynna Phillips, the daughter of The Mamas & the Papas band members John and Michelle Phillips and the half-sister of Mackenzie and Bijou Phillips.

The concert will include many of the Reunion Tour songs as well as several Beach Boys songs that have never been performed before, said Jardine, one of the original Beach Boys and a neighbor and high school classmate of Brian’s.

“We have the Beach Boys heart and soul,” he said. “Brian is the architect of the music.”

Considered the musical genius of the popular American rock band, Wilson co-wrote, arranged, produced and performed more than two dozen Top 40 Hits, including "Surfer Girl," "Help Me Rhonda" and "California Girls."

The Beach Boys original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, Jardine. David Marks played with the band from 1962-63 and in later versions. Dennis Wilson drowned in December 1983 and Carl died of lung cancer in February 1993.

The band split up into different bands in 1998 after Carl’s death.

They reunited for a major worldwide anniversary tour in 2012 that included 73 appearances. It ended in the fall when Love announced that the band would return to its pre-50th Reunion Tour lineup, which did not include Wilson, Jardine and Marks.

“Sure, it hurt,” Jardine said. “But we all want to continue this music, and it would be foolish not to go out and do what we do best. We are the majority of the Beach Boys and we have the sound.”

Jardine has Michigan connections. He left the band for a year to study pre-dentistry at what was then Ferris Institute and today is known as Ferris State University. While there, he formed a folk group called the Pub that sang mostly Kingston Trio songs.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are available at the Interlochen box office, online at tickets.interlochen.org or by phone: 276-7800 or 800-681-5920.
