BEULAH — Authorities are investigating a two-vehicle crash north of Beulah that left one man dead and closed U.S. 31.
Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel said the crash occurred today at 2:40 p.m. on U.S. 31 between Worden Road and Fairway Drive. He said it appears a man driving a red Ford Focus strayed into the path of a pickup truck.
"The driver from the other vehicle said he just crossed into his path," Schendel said.
The Ford's driver died in the head-on crash.
Schendel didn't immediately have identifying information on the drivers, but said the one who drove the Ford died in the crash. He said both drivers were in their 20s and appeared to be local residents.
The pickup truck driver wasn't injured.
Authorities closed U.S. 31 in both directions after the crash while they waited for Michigan State Police crash reconstruction team to arrive.
Schendel said an investigation is underway, but an alert his deputies received about the Ford before the crash may provide a clue as to what happened.
"Someone said he was all over the road," he said.
