Evansville beats Bums in extra innings

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Traverse City was able to survive a ninth-inning jam to get to extra innings.

The Beach Bums weren’t so fortunate in the 10th.

Josh Allen’s first hit of the game was an RBI single that scored Phillip Wilson from second to give Evansville a 3-2 win over the Beach Bums on Thursday.

Evansville threatened to win the game one inning earlier when the Otters put runners at second and third with two outs, but Traverse City pitcher Chuck Ghysels worked out of the tight spot when he got Kolin Conner to pop out to end the inning.

Traverse City overcame a 2-0 deficit in the game after Evansville scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a Shayne Houck two-run homer. Houck and Wilson each had two hits for Evansville. The Beach Bums answered with a run in the fourth on a Jovan Rosa RBI single that plated Sean Gusrang and a run in the fifth on a Greg Harisis RBI single that scored Rob Benedict, who led Traverse City going 2 for 3, to tie the game.

Nate O’Bryan (1-2) took the loss for Traverse City, allowing the game-winning run on two hits in .1 inning of relief. He came on for Ghysels to start the 10th. Ghysels had given up just one hit over two innings in relief of starter Casey Delgado, who went seven innings and allowed five hits, two runs, walked one and struck out eight.

Evan Mott (3-0) got the win, getting the final out of the top of the 10th for the Otters (28-18), who took two of three from the Beach Bums (19-29) in the series to pull into a tie for first with Washington in the Frontier League’s East Division.

Traverse City heads home for a three game series against Normal, starting tonight. It’s the final series before the Frontier League All-Star Break.
