TRAVERSE CITY — Three runs were all that separated Traverse City and River City in this week’s three-game series at Wuerfel Park.
Unfortunately for the Beach Bums, all three games were decided by one run and all in the Rascals’ favor.
Despite a ninth-inning home run by Jeff DeBlieux, River City held off the Beach Bums for a 7-6 Frontier League win Thursday night.
The Rascals broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. It was a 6-5 game entering the ninth when River City scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a Saxon Butler RBI double. In the bottom half of the inning, DeBlieux smacked his third home run of the season with two out, but Rascals closer Gabriel Shaw struck out Yazy Arbelo to end it.
The Beach Bums tied a season-high with three home runs. Jovan Rosa belted a solo shot in the second after River City had jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Greg Harisis, who had three hits and scored three runs, hit a solo homer in the seventh that pulled Traverse City to within 6-5.
Arbelo enjoyed a big night. He had a two-run double in the third to knot the game at 3-3. He tied it at 4-4 in the fifth with an RBI single.
River City’s Hector Crespo snapped that deadlock with an RBI triple in the sixth. He later scored on a ground out.
Tommy Organ (3-1) earned the win in relief of starter Ethan Carter, who gave up four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Scott Vachon (0-1) suffered the loss for Traverse City. He allowed two runs in one inning of work.
Traverse City hosts the Windy City ThunderBolts tonight in the first of a three-game series. Casey Delgado (5-2, 2.68) will get the call for the Beach Bums, Jake Fisher (2-6, 5.33) for the ThunderBolts
Gates open at 5 p.m. tonight for the pre-game Welcome Home Celebration on the field. In addition, the Blue Angels and Rolling Thunder will be in attendance and a P-51 Mustang will be performing a pre-game flyover. An extended fireworks show will follow the game.
