LELAND — Forgetfulness rather than criminal activity seems to be the culprit in a Leland stolen vehicle caper.
A Williamsburg man, 55, who drove to the Leland Wine Festival called authorities late June 14 to report his Chevrolet Tahoe stolen. He told deputies he parked his vehicle on North Main Street that afternoon, but it disappeared.
Leelanau County deputies took the report, entered vehicle information into a database but received no clues for 11 days. That's when they located it, unlocked, in a parking lot at an establishment the victim visited after the festival.
Authorities believe the vehicle's owner forgot he moved it from his original parking spot.
