ELK RAPIDS — Four members of an Ellsworth family suffered injuries in a two-vehicle crash along a stretch of U.S. 31 in Antrim County.
Sheriff Dan Bean said deputies are investigating the Thursday afternoon crash in Elk Rapids Township. He said a minivan driven by Dana Nachazel, 16, crashed into the back of a double dump truck as it made a turn onto Cairn Highway.
Emergency personnel took Nachazel and three passengers to Munson Medical Center. Bean said their injuries were not life-threatening, but did note that ambulance crews requested a helicopter for two victims.
"They were busted up, that's all I know," he said.
Munson spokesman Dale Killingbeck said today that hospital staff treated and released Dana Nachazel, Sara Nachazel, 19, and Lucas Nachazel, 14. Their mother, Lois Nachazel, 43, remains hospitalized in fair condition.
Eric Ziesmer, 47, of Elk Rapids, drove the dump truck. He wasn't injured.
Bean said deputies haven't yet issued citations and are looking into whether driver error caused the crash. He said Dana Nachazel had just received her driver's permit.
